Orbit Milton Keynes Get Magnificent Again
Gala Weekend, Cardiff, 2012
Gala Weekends are national level competitions where competitors at levels National C, FIG B and FIG A compete and try to qualify for the British Championships.
In last year’s British Championships we had 7 lucky and magnificent competitors taking part. After this weekend we are back to that number.
In Cardiff Martyn Howard was first to jump at 9.0 am in the O19 Men’s Fig B. From a field of 24 he was lying 6th. after his set routine, just the right sort of area to be in. However, the unexpected happened, and he fell during his voluntary routine, ending his competition in Wales. Fortunately he qualified for the Nationals at an earlier competition and this was just for experience, although not of the type planned.
Following was Lewis Wheeler in the U17 Boys Fig B, who was making a remarkable recovery from a bad fall on the previous fateful Friday 13th. Jumping with bruising and a suspected broken nose, Lewis showed great courage and determination reaching full height in his set routine to score an 8 from the judges. He went on to deliver a fine voluntary routine, qualifying himself for the Championships in July, and taking 5th. place on the day .
Dayle Walker concluded our Saturday, also impeded, recovering from illness, but was unable to reach the standard that she had set during training. She was 18th. and will attempt to raise our number of finalists to 8 when she goes to Liverpool in June.
Sunday saw us with one lone competitor in the national C grades, illness taking its toll, but her qualification if possible, would give us a team in the U19 Ladies. Coming back from a few years in retirement, Emily Young showed that she had forgotten nothing, producing a fine set routine to put her in 4th.place! She kept up the pace in her voluntary, qualified for the Nationals, and maintained 4th. place on the day. And, she now makes us a team.
Two great results, and we look forwards to Liverpool for some more before the 2012 Championships. Our thanks to all our parents, officials and supporters.
